Tick Removal

Well, I knew it was only a matter of time. With us all working in the pastures, and walking around out there in the evenings - someone was bound to get a tick. Bart and I are pretty cautious. We check our clothes each night, and so far we have been very lucky. No ticks!

However, Sky & Brandon have been sitting in their hunting blind for long periods of time trying to hunt wild turkeys. Brandon came to me today, and needed my help. (Why Sky couldn't do this, is beyond me). Anyway, he had a tick that had attached onto him. It was on his back.

So, I got to play doctor today.
I got all of my supplies out: peroxide, matches, cotton balls and tweezers.

First, you have to check to see if it is dead or alive. Visually it looked like it was dead. Touching it with peroxide and a cotton ball, I knew that it wasn't moving anymore.

Second: I lit a match, blew it out and held the hot end close to the tick so see for sure if it was dead. Ticks don't like heat, so sometimes they will let go and back away from the heat source. This one was definitely dead, so we had to prepare to remove it.

Thirdly: They attach really good, too. I pulled on it the first time, (I didn't want to smash it), and that sucker wasn't comin lose. It popped right out of my tweezers still clingin to Brandon.

Brandon kept wigglin. I had to tell him to sit still - impossible for him even without ticks.

The second time .... I got him!

It took part of Brandons skin off with it. They are nasty little buggers.

Lastly: He was a good size one too. You have to check to make sure that you get the head out with it. Sometimes they will pop off. We got the whole thing this time.

Ewww .... nasty little things.
Well, I guess this is just another day in Tennessee! My job is done here. Whew!
