One thing with pets is that it is never boring. Today we went out to feed the horses, and noticed that DeeDee's leg was extremely swollen! She was walking on it, but you could tell that it was tender. Bart looked really close, and couldn't find any bites (like snake bites) or puncture wounds.
Of course it was after hours on a Friday night! I think that children and animals plan these things so that they are always "emergency" visits. Aargh! Anyway, as you can see in the photos - her leg was HUGE! So, we loaded her up and drove her to the vet across town (everything is across town).
Dr. Wooten was out on a farm call, and said that it would probably be an hour until he made it back to the clinic. So, we headed in that direction, and then just hung out at their facility. It really is a nice place. DeeDee didn't even act like anything was even wrong. She just ate grass like there wasn't enough.
This cute guy is always there for us!
After Dr. Wooten examined her - he couldn't find any reason for the swelling either. He was a bit baffled too. So, he prescribed an anti-inflammatory and some pain meds for her. He called it Cellulitis. He wanted to keep her overnight, but them decided that we could take her home because she was able to walk. Actually he was extremely surprised by how well she was walking.
He did recommend water therapy for the next few days. Twice a day we have to run cold water down her leg for 20 minutes. In the evenings, we get 2 bags of ice, put it in the bucket, then pour the cold water down with a bucket - again for 20 minutes.
DeeDee doesn't like it to well, but for part of the treatment, I give her some grain with her medication in it, so that distracts her for a little while.
Then for some added support, Bart wrapped her leg up with some wrap (kind of like an ace bandage). So now, we have a brown horse with one blue leg!
Bute for the pain - each night.
So this is what is keeping us busy for the next few days.
The End!
